Heroes vs. Villains

My Hero Academia Season 6 (Boku no Hero Academia 6th Season / 僕のヒーローアカデミア) is the best season so far. There was a lot of action and hardly any slice of life content revolving around the students.

In the first half of the season, we get to watch the heroes undertake 2 simultaneous raids. Half of the heroes raid a lab connected to the League of Villains. And the other half of the heroes raid the Paranormal Liberation Front’s headquarters. And when I say “half of the heroes” I mean like half of all heroes in Japan.

There were a lot of heroes involved in these raids. The hero students were also involved. But, what I was way more interested in were the pro heroes. As I’ve said many times, I don’t care about the students.

I should also point out that these raids weren’t like most fights in the series. We didn’t see the heroes arrest the bad guys after a hard-fought battle. Both sides had casualties. Not every hero made it out of the raids unscathed or with their lives. And the same is true for the villains.

My favorite part of this portion of the season, though, had to be Mirko’s fight at the start. I don’t remember what episode it was. But it was somewhere in the first few episodes. Mirko definitely got her time to shine. It may have even been the best part of the whole season.

We also got some good Midnight and Mt. Lady content. Basically, this was a good arc for the most popular female heroes. I’m a huge Mt. Lady fan, so it was great seeing her play a major role. Oh, and my boy Rock Lock showed up, too.

One for All’s Final Form

The second half of the season is very different from the first. It’s no longer about massive battles between every hero and villain. Instead, it follows Deku as he goes solo and uses the full breadth of One for All’s abilities.

I don’t like Deku as a protagonist. But, this part of the season was still good. Deku is a lot more interesting once he’s using a variety of quirks rather than just his power storage quirk. Fights are much more dynamic when the solution isn’t simply punching the enemy hard.

And the best fight Deku has in this season comes when he faces off against Lady Nagant. Lady Nagant is a former hero-turned-villain who broke out of Tartarus. Well, she didn’t break out of Tartarus. All for One and Shigaraki broke her out of Tartarus along with every other villain there.

Something else that was cool about this arc was seeing how All for One was able to manipulate the heroes. I went over this in more detail in some of my episode reviews. But, basically, All for One was able to turn the civilians against the heroes.

And, the best part is that he didn’t even have to show himself to do it. He had everyone else do the work for him. By releasing all the villains from Tartarus, he caused chaos. And the civilians couldn’t rely on the heroes to keep up with the influx of villains.

Also, by remaining quiet and out of the spotlight, he let the civilians assume the worst. Everyone knows All for One has multiple quirks and can implant quirks into people. So, when they see Deku using One for All, they assume he’s a villain and distance themselves from him.

The Next Arc

Up until the second half of this arc, I thought All for One was a boring villain. He’s evil basically for the sake of being evil — that hasn’t changed, even now. And, his quirk being that he can have almost any quirk isn’t too exciting, either.

Well, his quirk could be exciting. But, from the one fight we saw involving him (when he fought All Might) he didn’t do too much. He combined a few quirks to give himself pseudo-strength on par with All Might’s. And since then, all he’s really done is create EMPs.

But, now that we’ve seen All for One be a bit more strategic, I’m interested. The way he was able to erode the civilian’s confidence in heroes and Deku specifically is unique. And the implication is that he’s been doing this kind of stuff all along — even in his fight against All Might.

While I’m now looking forward to what All for One is going to do next, not every villain has my interest. Dabi, in particular, is one I don’t care about anymore. The big reveal about him being Touya Todoroki wasn’t a surprise to anyone. And his motivations are lame.

But, there’s still hope for Season 7. In the final episode of Season 6, we’re introduced to some new pro heroes from overseas. I’m excited to see these new heroes in action. And the hero I’m most excited to see is Star and Stripe, the United States’ #1 pro hero.

Even though I’ve always given My Hero Academia high ratings, I still likely qualify as a hater. I’ve never actually looked forward to a season and I hate most of the main characters. But, this time, I have high expectations for Season 7 thanks to Season 6.

Conclusion

In the end, I gave My Hero Academia Season 6 an 8/10. It’s the best season of the series to date. But, I’m hoping that Season 7 can surpass it. Though, I don’t see myself giving it a 9/10. It would have to be crazy good for that.
