Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Episode 23 Review

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Episode 23 Review

Conquering the Labyrinth

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Episode 23 begins the second test of the First-Class Mage Exam. Sense is the proctor for this test. She has a reputation for proctoring the hardest tests possible. But, she has a very different outlook on mages than Genau (the first test proctor).

Sense is a pacifist. That means her tests don’t pit the examinees against each other. And, she doesn’t believe that those who are unable to pass her tests should die. As I said in a previous review, killing off promising mages is a waste.

Now, with that all said, Sense’s tests are still difficult — regardless of what she says. In this test, the examinees will have to make their way to the bottom of an uncharted labyrinth. But, the labyrinth isn’t uncharted because nobody has tried. It’s because nobody has ever made it to the bottom.

How is Sense going to verify if an examinee has made it to the bottom of the labyrinth? She’s going to go down there herself. I’m pretty sure she has a teleportation spell. So, I thought she’d teleport herself down there. But, that’s not what she had in mind.

Instead, Sense plans to travel with the examinees and reach the bottom floor with them. However, the examinees decided to split up rather than work together. So, she has to pick one group to follow. And, of course, she picks Frieren and Fern because she believes they have the best odds.

This begs the question, “What if Frieren and Fern don’t make it?” What if Sense picked the wrong group? How could she then verify whether or not any of the others made it to the bottom? I don’t think she’s been to the bottom herself before.

The Joy of Exploration

As we saw in this episode, Frieren seems to enjoy exploring dungeons. Though, that wasn’t always the case. She discovered how much fun dungeons were thanks to Himmel. He’s the one who taught her that every nook and cranny of a dungeon should be searched.

It doesn’t matter if you quickly find the correct path that leads to a lower floor. You should still explore the rest of the floor you’re on before moving on. And, the reason for this is simple. You never know what you’ll find. In Frieren’s case, this means magic items and grimoires.

Throughout this exam arc, I’ve noticed how different Frieren is from the other mages. She doesn’t have the same philosophy as most of them when it comes to either life or magic. Denken is the closest to Frieren — probably due to his age. But, even he’s different than her.

Frieren caught by a mimic from the anime series Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 23
Frieren caught by a mimic

One of the major things that sets Frieren apart is how much she loves magic. She doesn’t view magic as a tool like most of the others. Magic isn’t something she uses simply to achieve some other goal. To her, magic itself is the reward.

This different outlook on magic might not be something everyone can achieve, though. Compared to Frieren, humans have a very limited amount of time. So, it makes more sense for them to view magic as a tool. They want to use it to achieve the things they want to achieve before their time runs out.

Fern is different in another way. Sense asks why Fern has worked so hard to become a skilled mage. From Sense’s position, it doesn’t seem like Fern has a goal or particular love for magic. But, Fern continues on her path because magic brought her and Frieren together.

Conquering Yourself

Toward the end of Episode 23, we learn the likely reason why this dungeon is uncharted. Well, aside from all the traditional traps in it, that is. Those have surely stopped at least a few adventurers over the years.

The real reason nobody has made it to the bottom of this dungeon is that they have to conquer themselves to do it. The dungeon produces copies of anyone who enters. And, in order to reach the bottom, those who enter must defeat these copies.

Why is this so hard to do? Well, we can look back to Naruto: Shippūden for the answer. In the Gaara rescue arc, Team Guy has to fight copies of themselves. And, the problem is that these copies are as skilled as the real thing. But, they don’t tire or run out of chakra (in this case, mana).

Methode, Denken, Laufen, and Richter preparing to fight a copy of Frieren from the anime series Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 23
Methode, Denken, Laufen, and Richter preparing to fight a copy of Frieren

So, think of if you’re a mage in this dungeon and you come across the copy of yourself. You’ll fight at a stalemate until you eventually run out of energy and die. That’s why tackling this dungeon in a group is so important.

Wirbel, Scharf, and Ehre were together when they came across their copies. So, Wirbel correctly assigns each of them a different copy to fight based on their skills. Denken’s party comes across the Laufen copy on its own. Because of that, they’re able to work together to defeat it.

But, here’s a potential problem. You’re not guaranteed to come across your own copy. At the very end of the episode, we see Denken’s party run into the copy of Frieren. My guess is that this is where their exam will end. And, I’m predicting Fern and Frieren will run into Sense’s copy.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Sousou no Frieren Episode 23? Do you think any of the 18 remaining examinees are going to die during Sense’s test? How many do you expect to pass the test? And, Do you think Denken’s party will be able to defeat the copy of Frieren?

Chained Soldier Episode 7 Review

Chained Soldier Episode 7 Review

Tenka Izumo’s Ame-no-Mitori

Chained Soldier Episode 7 confirmed what Tenka Izumo’s peach ability is. She can manipulate space — and we see her do this in two specific ways in this episode. But, it’s possible that she can use this ability in additional ways, as well.

Back in my review of Episode 6, I theorized about what Tenka’s ability could be. And, at the time, I wasn’t sure if creating portals was unique to her. Though, I was pretty convinced that her ability had to do with the portals to some extent.

Well, now we know. The portals are unique to Tenka. And, they’re not exactly portals in the sense that I was thinking of them. Like, yes, they’re portals. But, more precisely, they’re wormholes created by her space manipulation. She can enter a wormhole in one place and exit from it in another.

Tenka Izumo using her peach ability Ame-no-Mitori from the anime series Chained Soldier Episode 7
Tenka Izumo using her peach ability Ame-no-Mitori

Creating wormholes alone would be a pretty powerful ability. However, that’s only part of what Tenka can do. We also saw her create a black hole to suck in her opponent. And, if the villain wasn’t saved by his ally, that would have been game over for him. There’s no coming back from that.

From what I saw, there also doesn’t appear to be a drawback to Tenka using her ability. Like any ability, she’ll get worn out if she uses it too much. But, we saw her use it quite a bit here and she didn’t look tired afterward.

Now, the craziest thing about Tenka’s ability is what it means for the 6th Squadron. They have members who can control both time and space. And, yet, they’re not even the strongest of the Mato Defense Force squadrons. So, what kinds of overpowered abilities do the other squadrons have?

Twice the Work, Twice the Reward

In the most recent fight against the shuuki, Yuuki did something new. He became the slave of two masters (Kyouka and Himari) at the same time. This made him even more powerful than if he was the slave of only one of them.

Before I continue, I want to point out once again that this is likely the most masters he’ll ever have. I mentioned this in one of my earlier episode reviews. But, only Kyouka and Himari can become Yuuki’s master because it’s part of Kyouka’s ability.

So, I doubt we’ll ever see an even more powerful Yuuki with three masters. He might get another power-up in a different way. But, it won’t likely be through the addition of another master. Now, with that said, this power-up also doesn’t seem like something we’re going to see used often.

Kyouka and Himari undressing to bathe with Yuuki from the anime series Chained Soldier Episode 7
Kyouka and Himari undressing to bathe with Yuuki

Yes, having two masters made Yuuki twice as strong. But, it also came with twice the cost — both for Yuuki and for his masters. Yuuki was worn out more than usual. This could be due to the number of shuuki he fought. However, it also seems to be due to his power output while in that form.

Luckily for Yuuki, having two masters means he gets two rewards. And, the reward he got this time was bathing with Kyouka and Himari. That’s a pretty good reward. But, the reward itself seems to be based on how hard Yuuki worked.

So, if he had two masters and he did a little bit of work, he might get a normal kiss from each of them. But, because he fought so many shuuki in this battle, his reward was greater. That’s why this was the most sexual reward he’s received, so far.

Visiting the 6th Squadron

In the second half of Episode 6, Kyouka, Himari, and Yuuki visit the 6th Squadron’s headquarters. Tenka, Yachiho, and Sahara are there, as expected. But, Tenka also mentions that they have other members who are currently out.

We don’t know how many other members the 6th Squadron has. However, we know there’s more than one since Tenka mentioned members (plural). And, we know one of the people not currently at their HQ is the caretaker. Though, I’m going to assume the 6th Squadron’s caretaker isn’t a man like Yuuki.

What about the other member(s)? There may be only one other aside from the caretaker. And, if that’s the case, I’d expect them to fulfill a role similar to Nei in the 7th Squadron. After all, Tenka, Yachiho, and Sahara are all combatants. Well, Tenka’s also a support type. But, they’re not dedicated supports like Nei is.

Yachiho Azuma in the gym from the anime series Chained Soldier Episode 7
Yachiho Azuma in the gym

Speaking of Nei, she’s the titular character in the next episode. And the reason I’m bringing that up is because it implies we won’t meet the other members of the 6th Squadron just yet. If we were, I’d assume the episode to be named after one of them.

There are some other things we learned about members of the 6th Squadron I want to mention. The first is that Yachiho has an obsession with Himari. We knew she secretly liked her younger sister. But, after seeing her room, it’s clear she’s obsessed.

Yachiho isn’t the only member of the 6th Squadron who likes someone from the 7th. Tenka is also interested in Yuuki. And, at the end of the episode, she asks if Kyouka would be willing to give him to her. I doubt Kyouka will allow this since only she (and Himari) can bring out Yuuki’s potential.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Mato Seihei no Slave Episode 7? Is Tenka’s or Yachiho’s peach ability stronger? Were you surprised that Shushu didn’t try to insert herself into Yuuki’s reward this week? And, why do you think Tenka wants Yuuki? Does she have a crush on him or is there another reason?

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 7 Review

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 7 Review

Azure in Trouble!

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 7 was a pretty good episode. But, considering it was a Magia Azure episode, I thought it would be a bit better. The best content came toward the end. And, for the most part, the rest of the episode was fine.

In Episode 7, Azure has to come to terms with the fact that she’s been changed by Magia Baiser. As we’ve seen over the course of the series, Azure has become a masochist. She no longer has the drive to fight Baiser. Instead, she wants Baiser to dominate her.

If this was happening in a vacuum, that would be one thing. But, Azure’s failings don’t only affect her. They affect Magenta and Sulfur, as well. If Azure isn’t pulling her weight in the fights against Enormita, it’s three against two. Though, whether or not that actually matters is up for debate.

Nero Alice and Magia Baiser from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 7
Nero Alice and Magia Baiser

Sure, when fighting Enormita, Azure isn’t doing much to help her teammates. However, does she need to? Baiser and Nero Alice don’t want to destroy the magical girls — they want to play with them. It’s only Leoparde who wants to see the magical girls disappear.

So, with that in mind, fights against Enormita aren’t very high-stakes. Enormita isn’t attacking civilians or anything like that. They’re only fighting the Tres Magia and primarily doing so because it’s fun.

If the Tres Magia were fighting a monster that was attacking the city, things would be different. Azure would likely be helpful in a situation like that. The only way she wouldn’t be is if it was a tentacle monster. Then, she might happen to get herself captured again.

But, I guess every second spent fighting Enormita is a second wasted. The Tres Magia could be doing other things.

Magical Girl Exhibition

I thought there weren’t ever going to be other magical girls or Enormita villains in this series. We see some other girls in the opening for Mahoako. But, I assumed those girls would be part of some third party.

However, Episode 7 features some additional magical girls and villains. So, let’s start by going over what we know about the three new magical girls. And, that shouldn’t take too long because we basically know nothing about them. We know that they exist and we know what they look like. But, that’s it.

Well, I guess there are technically four new magical girls. The first of them is Magical Girl Miracle Mimiru. She could be a real magical girl. But, it seems more likely that she’s a made-up magical girl. We only see her within the context of an anime.

Utena Hiiragi at a magical girl exhibition from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 7
Utena Hiiragi at a magical girl exhibition

Alright, so the other magical girls. Utena and Sayo both attend a magical girl exhibition. And, in this exhibition, we see a lot of different magical girl outfits. But, other than the Tres Magia (and Miracle Mimiru), we only see pictures of three other magical girls. So, I’m guessing these three will appear in the series at some point.

The first is a girl with pink hair and a blue, gold, and white outfit. The second is a girl with blonde hair and a green and white outfit. And, the third is a girl with short orange hair and an orange and white outfit.

I don’t remember seeing any pictures of these three together. But, I’m going to assume that, like the Tres Magia, they’re a magical girl unit. Though, it’s not like magical girls have to work in teams of three. We know that Magia Magenta started off as a solo magical girl.

The Fall of Azure

Toward the end of Episode 7, we see Baiser almost break Azure. She tortured Azure to the point that Azure almost ceased being a magical girl. She almost fell to the dark side and even began begging “Mistress” Baiser to punish her more.

Unfortunately, this is where Utena and I have differing opinions regarding magical girls. Once Azure stops fighting back, Utena loses interest. Utena doesn’t torture the Tres Magia simply because she wants to torture them. She enjoys seeing magical girls struggling and fighting their hardest despite being tortured.

If Azure stops fighting back, then there’s no point. She wouldn’t even be a magical girl any longer. And, as we know, that’s very important to Utena. She doesn’t want to torture just anyone. It has to be a magical girl who’s fighting back against her or it’s not worth it.

Magia Azure looking up at Magia Baiser from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 7
Magia Azure looking up at Magia Baiser

Baiser decides to fly off before Azure breaks completely. But, what would have happened if she didn’t? What if she accepted Azure as her torture slave? Well, at the very end of the episode, we see what that might look like. Azure, would cease being a magical girl altogether.

The new magical girls may or may not show up in the series. But, we know for a fact that four more members of Enormita will. There’s a group of three — one dressed like a ship captain, one like an assassin(?), and one like a nun. And, there’s a woman who appears to be the leader of Enormita.

These Enormita villains are the real deal. They’re closer to Leoparde than Baiser or Nero Alice. They actually want to defeat magical girls — and they do defeat magical girls. So, while they’re still Enormita members, I think they’ll be in conflict with Baiser.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 7? Do you think we’ll get an episode like this for Magenta and Sulfur, too? Will the three new magical girls ever show up in the series? And, which of the new villains’ designs do you like the most?

One Piece Episode 1089 Review

One Piece Episode 1089 Review

The Lulusia Kingdom Never Existed

One Piece Episode 1089 was an amazing episode. Everything about it was great. The art and animation were great. The direction was great. And, the content was epic. So, let’s get right into the big talking point: Im’s power.

In my Episode 1088 review, I was wondering whether or not Sabo saw Im. We now know he did. And, to prevent him from revealing Im’s existence to the world, the entire island he was on got obliterated. Not by Marine warships, but by what appeared to be Im’s power.

Now, to be fair, we don’t know if this was Im’s doing. It was heavily implied, though. We also don’t know what exactly this power is. Is it Im’s devil fruit ability? Or, is this one of the ancient weapons? If it’s an ancient weapon, that would mean it’s Uranus — we already know where Poseidon and Pluton are.

The Lulusia Kingdom being crossed off a map from the anime series One Piece Episode 1089
The Lulusia Kingdom being crossed off a map

My prediction is that this is Uranus, not Im’s devil fruit ability. It’s been long theorized that Uranus would be a sky-based weapon. And, if this is a devil fruit ability, I have no idea what devil fruit it would be.

But, regardless of what this power is, we can be pretty sure Im’s held it for a very long time. Remember that little thing called the Void Century that took place between 800 and 900 years ago? Remember how it ended with the destruction (and disappearance) of the ancient kingdom?

Well, it looks like we now know what happened to the ancient kingdom. After its destruction, the World Government (and likely Im) came to power. So, it seems pretty clear that Im used this same island-destroying power 800 years ago. Forget everything Morgans is writing about, this is big news.

Entering a New Chapter

You might have noticed that the second part of Episode 1089’s title was “Luffy and Sabo’s Paths!” But, that’s kind of a weird title for the episode if Sabo’s path just came to an end, right? That’s why I’m pretty sure Sabo survived the destruction of the Lulusia Kingdom.

How could he have done this, though? It’s not quite as hard as you’d think. After all, Sabo has a logia devil fruit. That means the lasers that rained down from the sky shouldn’t be able to hurt him — unless they’re haki lasers.

The only thing he has to worry about is ending up in the ocean now that the island no longer exists. But, I have faith that he’ll figure out some way to escape a watery grave. Oh, and speaking of the island disappearing, did you notice the giant hole that was left behind?

It looks a lot like the hole below Enies Lobby. Is that where the ancient kingdom was once located?

Nami shivering in the snow from the anime series One Piece Episode 1089
Nami shivering in the snow

Anyway, enough about Sabo’s path. What about Luffy’s? We know that this is the Egghead arc. And, we know the Straw Hats are going to make their way to Egghead Island. But, at this point, they don’t really have a destination.

It’s not like, after Wano, they knew they were going to Egghead Island next. If you recall, Luffy, Law, and Kid all chose different directions and went their separate ways. And, on top of that, nobody knows where the final Road Poneglyph is.

For the first time in a long time, the Straw Hats don’t have a clear destination. Ever since Punk Hazard, their path has been set. From Punk Hazard to Dressrosa to Zou to Whole Cake Island and finally to Wano. Now, they’re back to exploring.

The Girl in the Water

Despite being in a cold, snowy climate, the Straw Hats came across a hot, floating bubble of water in the ocean. Then, they noticed that there was someone within this bubble. Am I the only one who thought they were about to pick up Sabo?

Well, my Sabo theory didn’t last long. It turns out the person in the water was Jewelry Bonney, a member of the Worst Generation. She’s one of only two pirates from this generation who hasn’t gotten much screen time. So, I guess Egghead is the arc in which she’ll get to shine.

Law spent a lot of time with the Straw Hats. Blackbeard is one of the main antagonists of the series. Bege was at Whole Cake Island. And, Kid, Hawkins, Apoo, and Drake were all at Wano. Other than Bonney, Urouge is the only Worst Generation pirate we haven’t seen much of.

Jewelry Bonney (child form) from the anime series One Piece Episode 1089
Jewelry Bonney (child form)

Do you think Urouge is going to make an appearance in this arc, as well? From what I remember, the last time we saw him was before Apoo sold Kid and Hawkins out to Kaido. Kaido jumped off a sky island at that point, and I think we saw Urouge sitting up there watching.

I’m going to guess that Urouge isn’t going to be in this arc. Maybe he’ll be in the next arc (Elbaf?). But, I’m also going to guess that Bonney’s going to play a major role here. She’s going to be like Law in Dressrosa, Bege in Whole Cake Island, and Kid in Wano.

I’m looking forward to learning more about her. We know her devil fruit lets her change the age of herself and others. We also know she likes to eat a lot. However, I don’t think we know much else about her.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of One Piece Episode 1089? Do you think the power Im used to destroy the Lulusia Kingdom was Uranus or a devil fruit ability? How do you think Sabo is going to have escaped from the destruction? And, what do you want to learn about Jewelry Bonney in this arc?

One Piece Episode 1088 Review

Rayleigh to the Rescue

One Piece 1088 is the final episode grouped within the Wano arc (on Crunchyroll). But, the content of this episode, and the previous two episodes, falls under the Egghead arc. Why is that the case? Because it has more to do with Egghead than Wano.

Also, before I get into this episode, I want to say that I’m not as close to being caught up as I thought. There are (currently) five more episodes out. But, considering I’m doing two One Piece episode reviews per week right now, I should catch up soon.

Alright, now, there were two big surprises at the start of Episode 1088. The first is that Silvers Rayleigh rescued Boa Hancock. He arrived just in time and negotiated the withdrawal of both Blackbeard and the Marines. And, that was a shock considering this is Blackbeard we’re talking about.

Silvers Rayleigh drawing his sword from the anime series One Piece Episode 1088
Silvers Rayleigh drawing his sword

Now, I know Blackbeard is a smart pirate. He’s a schemer, which is how he’s gotten this far. But, I wasn’t expecting him to fall for Rayleigh’s bluff like that. Sure, this is Silvers Rayleigh we’re talking about. But, Rayleigh himself even admitted he’s not strong enough to beat Blackbeard.

I guess Blackbeard’s thought was that it wouldn’t simply be him versus Rayleigh. He’d also have to fight Boa Hancock (and probably Koby) at the same time. However, I still think he would have had the upper hand in that battle. After all, he has both the Dark Dark and Tremor Tremor Fruits.

The second big surprise was that we finally learned what pirate crew Shakuyaku was part of. We knew she had been a pirate in the past. But, we now know she was the captain of the Kuja Pirates. Shakuyaku was the Empress of Amazon Lily two generations before Boa Hancock.

Sabo and Cobra

The Reverie happened quite a while ago in the anime. But, what we have to keep in mind is that it was actually happening at the same time as the events of Wano. So, news from the Reverie is only now getting out to the rest of the world.

The big news (as Morgans would say) is that Sabo killed Cobra. As we know, Sabo is a high-ranking member of the Revolutionary Army as well as Luffy’s sworn brother. And, Cobra Nefertari is the King of Alabasta and Vivi’s father.

So, the question on everyone’s mind is, did Sabo actually kill Cobra? It seems unlikely for a variety of reasons. First of all, Sabo’s dream is to create a world in which everyone can be free. He’s not someone who’s going to kill others unless absolutely necessary.

Ivankov, Koala, and Morely of the Revolutionary Army from the anime series One Piece Episode 1088
Ivankov, Koala, and Morely of the Revolutionary Army

Second, Cobra isn’t an enemy of the Revolutionary Army. Sure, he’s one of the rulers who make up the World Government. But, that’s not who the Revolutionary Army is fighting against. They’re fighting against the Celestial Dragons who oppress the people of the world. It’s the Celestial Dragons, the Five Elder Stars, and Im who are the tyrants.

Though speaking of Im, I’m not sure if the Revolutionary Army knows about him. I mean, we barely know about him. And, I don’t remember if Sabo ran into him during Reverie since that was so long ago. He might have. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Anyway, why did this news come out about Sabo and Cobra? Well, Im or the Five Elder Stars likely had Cobra killed. Then, since Sabo infiltrated the Reverie, they used him as a scapegoat. As for Vivi’s disappearance, we also know that Im’s interested in her for some reason.

Luffy’s Dream

At the end of the episode, Luffy reveals his dream to the rest of the Straw Hat crew. And no, I don’t mean his dream of becoming King of the Pirates. Everyone knows that one. I mean his other dream that’s even more important.

Becoming King of the Pirates is something Luffy wants to achieve, of course. But, one of the main reasons he wants to achieve that is so that he can fulfill his true dream. And, from what I remember, it’s implied that this is the same dream Roger once had.

However, we still don’t know what this dream is. I really thought we were finally going to learn it considering the title of the episode. But, no. We’re not important enough. Luffy has only ever told 12 people — the 9 other Straw Hat crew members, Ace, Sabo, and Shanks.

Luffy lying on the deck of the Sunny from the anime series One Piece Episode 1088
Luffy lying on the deck of the Sunny

With that said, it’s not as if Luffy’s trying to keep this dream a secret. He genuinely didn’t realize that he’d never told his crew before. He thought they all knew what his dream was. So, he tells them without making a big deal about it.

What could Luffy’s dream be, though? We know it’s more than becoming the King of the Pirates. And, we can assume it’s not the same as Ace’s or Sabo’s dreams. So, it’s not to become a famous pirate or to create a world in which everyone can be free.

Everyone who hears his dream thinks it’s ridiculous, and most of them laugh. Is that a clue? He didn’t say he told Tama. So, it’s not to create a world in which everyone can eat as much as they want. But, it could be to create a world in which everyone laughs together.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of One Piece Episode 1088? Do you think Blackbeard could have beaten Boa, Koby, and Rayleigh? Do you think Sabo really was the one who killed Cobra? And, what do you predict Luffy’s true dream is? Do you think it’s something we’ve already heard him say before?
