Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage Episode 9

Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage Episode 9

Miranjo and the Demon

Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage Episode 9 did a stylized story right. The story of Miranjo and the Demon was way better than the story of Bosse and Shiina. And I’m not just talking about the story itself. I mean how it looked.

The art style of these two stories wasn’t the same. But, they had some similarities. However, the big difference was the animation. The animation in Episode 9 was way better than the animation in Episode 8. And that’s why Episode 8 looked bad.

But, let’s go over the content of this story because it’s actually pretty interesting. We learned a few things about the demon and demons in general. And the first thing we learned is that there’s an entire civilization of demons. Before this, I thought demons were rare, solitary beings.

Apparently, the demon civilization exists. And not only that, but people seem to know about it. In one scene we saw a king from another country making a deal with one of the demons there. So, it would seem that some kings travel to this country in search of power.

But, when Desha heard about the possibility that a demon could save Ouken, he didn’t appear to know of them. And the reason for this could be that the demons live on a different continent. We saw that the child demon who eventually befriended Miranjo fell into what looked to be the ocean.

He was then washed away and woke up on the bank of a river near Miranjo’s village. That doesn’t quite make sense because rivers flow out to the ocean, not the other way around. But, it might not have been the ocean. The demons might live far upstream.

The Prince and His Treasures

Episode 9’s second story is about Bojji preparing to go on his next adventure with Kage. It takes place at the very end of Season 1 when Bojji leaves the throne to Daida. Before he heads out, though, he wants to give gifts to everyone in the castle.

These gifts Bojji is handing out are his treasures — his prized possessions. He wants everyone else to have them because he believes they’ll bring everyone good luck. And also maybe he wants them to have something to remember him by while he’s away.

Oh, and Bojji had been keeping all these treasures in a chest in his room. Is this chest the titular treasure chest of courage? You could make the argument that Bojji’s treasures are what give him courage. They remind him of the good times he’s had with everyone.

Bojji giving Mitsumata a mirror from the anime series Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage Episode 9
Bojji giving Mitsumata a mirror

So, what gifts did Bojji give to everyone? Well, Bebin’s gift was first and I can’t say it’s that great. Bebin got some skin Mitsumata shed as a small snake. Still, that’s probably better than the cicada shells Bojji gave to Hokuro and Domas. Those were the worst three gifts.

In the next tier up, we have the gifts Bojji gave to Apeas and Dorshe. Apeas got a piece of flint that looked like a spear tip. And Dorshe got a fang of some kind. Not great gifts, but not terrible.

Then, there are the gifts Bojji gave to the two random old guys in the castle. They each got a doll of some sort; not bad gifts, but I have no idea who those guys are.

Hiling, Daida, and Miranjo got the best gifts. Hiling received a feather to wear. Daida received a sentimental acorn to plant. And Miranjo got a crystal ball.

Bojji’s Journey Continues

Episode 9 felt like the final episode of the season. The second story ends in the same place as Season 1. And it appears to set up the next season well. But, this isn’t the final episode. There’s still one more.

I’m curious to see what this episode is going to be about. I think we’ve already covered everything shown in the OP. So, what’s left for the final episode? My hope is that it’s a lead-in to the next season. Though, as far as I know, a second season isn’t coming anytime soon.

What could a lead-in episode look like? One obvious option would be for it to follow Bojji and Kage as they prepare for their journey. We could see them do things like gather any additional items they need. Or, we could see them plan out their destination or route.

Miranjo accepting a gift from Bojji from the anime series Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage Episode 9
Miranjo accepting a gift from Bojji

Another option would be for the episode to focus on other characters who are going to be important. Rather than following Bojji and Kage, it might follow Desha. At the end of the first season, we saw Desha become the #1 ranked king and enter the vault.

So, could this last episode pick up where the last episode of the main series left off with Desha? Might we get to see what item Desha picked from the vault? I’d like it if that was the case. But, that also might be too important to cover in this spin-off.

It’s also possible that the final episode could introduce some new characters. We could get a sneak peek at where Bojji and Kage are heading. Or, it could set up whatever the next conflict of the series is.

Of course, the episode might do none of this. It could be another normal episode.

Conclusion

What do you think of Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage Episode 9? Were you surprised to learn that there’s an entire demon civilization? Which of Bojji’s treasures do you think is the best? And what are you expecting from the final episode of the season? Let me know in the comments.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 10

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 10

Returning to the Back Passages

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 10 saw the return of the hound dogs. In case you forgot, the hound dogs are dog-like monsters that live in the back passages. To traverse the back passages, you first have to make a contract with the hound dogs.

We first met the hound dogs back in Episode 4 when Elias and Chise used the back passages to get to school. In my review of that episode, I made a prediction. And, it turns out that my prediction was partially correct.

I said one of Chise’s classmates would get lost in the back passages and that she would have to save them. And I also said that this would give Chise the opportunity to barter with the hound dogs herself. In Episode 4, the centaur bartered on Chise’s behalf.

The hound dogs of the back passages from the anime series The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Episode 10
The hound dogs of the back passages

So, how was my prediction correct in any way? Well, obviously the circumstances surrounding Chise’s return to the back passages were wrong. One of her classmates didn’t get lost there. Instead, Chise took one of her classmates (Lucy) into the back passages to escape enemies.

But, I was right about Chise going into the back passages to save one of her classmates. And, I was right about this return to the back passages giving Chise the chance to barter with the hound dogs. However, it wasn’t exactly Chise’s idea to enter the back passages. It looked like the dragon’s curse was what prompted her to do so.

And just like the last time the dragon’s curse spoke to Chise, she ended up causing someone else harm. The first time, Chise used her cursed arm to tear apart the Nuckalavee. This time, she led the wolfkin into the back passages so the hound dogs would attack them.

Mystery of the Webster Tragedy

We know a decent amount about the Webster Tragedy at this point. It actually seems like we know more about it than even those involved. So, let’s briefly recap what we know before I get into the real mystery.

We know the wolfkin who were hunting Lucy and her brother in this episode were present at the tragedy. And, according to what they said in this episode, they were hired to kill the Websters. Lucy and her brother weren’t supposed to survive the attack. That’s why the wolfkin are back to finish the job.

Something else we know is that the Webster’s spiders disappeared during the tragedy. This is important because the spiders’ silk can be used to copy forbidden books. And yet, Lucy’s brother said he doesn’t know what the motive for the slaughter was. Isn’t it obvious? Whoever hired the wolfkin wants to copy forbidden books.

Lucy Webster crying as a child from the anime series The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Episode 10
Lucy Webster crying as a child

Now, you might think that the big mystery is who was behind the tragedy. But, to me, that’s actually not the biggest mystery. Sure, we don’t know who’s behind it yet. However, since we can be pretty sure what their motive is, who exactly it is isn’t as important.

Instead, there are two bigger mysteries. The first is, why was Lucy spared/how did she survive? She came face to face with one of the wolfkin during the attack. And yet, she’s still here. So, what happened that led to her surviving?

The second mystery is, who was the child Lucy saw hiding in the corner during the attack? There’s not supposed to be another survivor from the Webster family. So, who was that kid? Well, my guess is the kid has something to do with Lucy’s survival. Was that kid a mage? A fairy?

The Testament of Carnamagos

Remember how someone stole a forbidden book from the college? That book was The Testament of Carnamagos. It’s forbidden because it covers topics such as stealing magic and reviving the dead. And, of course, Elias read the book. Why wouldn’t he have?

But, it turns out that Elias wasn’t the only person to have read The Testament of Carnamagos. Marielle (who I assume was in Season 1, but whom I don’t remember) also read it. However, since Marielle isn’t like Elias, reading the book almost made her lose her sanity.

Still, she did manage to read it, so she knows of its contents. She also experienced something when she read the book, though. And when she takes a look into the centaur teacher’s mind, she experiences it again. We don’t really have a term for what it is she experienced. But, let’s call it the curse of Carnamagos.

The Testament of Carnamagos from the anime series The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 Episode 10
The Curse of Carnamagos

Because Marielle experienced the same thing here as when she read the book, we can make an assumption. There’s a connection between the Testament of Carnamagos and the curse put on the teacher. Whoever’s sapping the teacher’s magic is likely using knowledge from the forbidden book.

Something to keep in mind is that Lucy also had her magic sapped away on the camping trip. Since that’s not something that would normally happen, it must also be connected. And that’s kind of a big deal because it gives us two important clues.

First, whoever stole the book did so before the camping trip. And second, whoever stole the book was present during the camping trip. Unless it was the slime teacher, that makes it highly likely it was one of the students. And while Philomela is the most probable culprit, I doubt it’s going to be her.

Conclusion

What do you think of The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 10? Do you think Chise understood what leading the wolfkin into the back passages would mean? Who do you think the child present during the Webster Tragedy is? And which student are you expecting to be the culprit behind the stolen book? Let me know in the comments.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 22

Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 22

100 Punches

What else can I say about Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 22 other than that it was great, as expected. At this point, we should all know that every episode of Vinland Saga is going to be a banger.

By this point, I hope that the majority of people calling Season 2 boring have dropped the series. They don’t deserve to see this content. Somehow, they’d call this episode boring even though it had a lot of great moments. For example, there was Thorfinn calling out Drott to finish his 100 punches.

At first, I thought Thorfinn may have been a bit harsh to Drott. Did he really need to say his punches hurt less than insect bites? As someone who wants peace, I’m not so sure insulting other people is the way to go. But, after thinking it over a bit more, this was probably the right call.

Thorfinn asking to be punched more from the anime series Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 22
Thorfinn asking to be punched more

If Thorfinn stood there and took Drott’s punches in silence, what would the soldiers think? They’d think that, although good at taking a beating, Thorfinn doesn’t have a warrior’s heart. However, by speaking up and insulting Drott, he showed that’s not the case.

Thorfinn is a fighter. He’s just fighting in his own way. And with his words, he made it clear that he’s stronger than Drott. Thorfinn didn’t only say that Drott’s punches are weaker than a bug’s bite. He also said that he’s a busy man and he wants to get these punches over with.

That’s something the soldiers seemed to respect. Thorfinn’s saying, “I’m stronger than you, and I’m going to prove it. I’m not going to run away. I’m going to stand my ground and we’re going to finish this.” And by the end of the 100 punches, even Drott respected him.

The King’s Former Guard

I can understand why Canute’s men wouldn’t believe Thorfinn saying he was a former guard of Canute. He’s small and unimpressive looking. And he’s also a slave, which isn’t exactly the career path most of the king’s guard goes down.

But, by standing his ground and taking 100 punches from Drott, Thorfinn earned respect. No normal man would be able to achieve such a feat. So, the fact that Thorfinn accomplished this proves that he’s strong. However, Thorfinn could have accomplished the same thing without getting his face busted.

As Wulf says, Thorfinn could have defeated Drott in combat. That would have been the quickest way to prove his status as a former member of the king’s guard. Of course, Thorfinn didn’t do this because he wants to avoid violence at all costs. Even if he defeated Drott without harming him, a fight is still a fight.

Wulf speaking to Thorfinn from the anime series Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 22
Wulf speaking to Thorfinn

Why should that matter, though? If Thorfinn is able to defeat Drott in a fight by disarming him, why shouldn’t he do it? The answer is pretty simple — and it’s something Thorfinn actually brings up to Snake earlier on. Once you begin fighting, it’s difficult to talk things out.

If Thorfinn beat Drott in a fight, would the other soldiers really have accepted it? Or, would they view Thorfinn as someone who got lucky? Would they then want their turn to prove that they can defeat the man who beat Drott? By engaging in a fight at all, Thorfinn gets farther from his goal.

Instead, he needs to show that he’s stronger than the soldiers without fighting. He needs to make them understand his conviction in a way that doesn’t make them more mad. To that end, he did a perfect job.

The King of Rebellion

Am I the only one who thought the waves were actually going to stop when Canute commanded them to? For a brief moment, I thought we were about to get some implied magic from Canute. You have no idea how relieved I was when that didn’t happen.

But, this was a pretty powerful scene. The whole point of Canute trying to stop the waves was to show how powerless he is. Yes, he’s the king of the largest country in northern Europe. And yes, he has the most feared army. But, even he’s powerless before his God.

Now, despite thinking this was a powerful scene, I’m not entirely sure what Canute’s point here is. At first, I thought he was trying to say that war is one of those inevitable things that can’t be stopped — like the waves. But, I’m not so sure that’s it.

Canute standing with his men from the anime series Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 22
Canute standing with his men

Toward the end of his speech, Canute declares that he wants to save the Vikings. He can’t create a paradise on Earth, because that would go against God’s will. After all, if God wanted the Earth to be a paradise, He would have made it one, right?

However, the part I don’t understand then is how Canute plans to save the Vikings. Is his plan simply to eradicate all opposition? Technically, that would put an end to the wars. And it would be his justification for going to war. But, it’s not as if he stated that’s his goal.

His only stated goal is to save the Vikings. And to do that, he needs the wealth from Ketil’s farm. If this doesn’t make sense to you, congratulations, Einar is with you. As Einar points out, who is this benefiting other than Canute and his men? It’s not the average person.

Conclusion

What do you think of Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 22? Did you think Thorfinn was actually down after 32 punches? Should Thorfinn have fought and disarmed Drott? And, did you think we were about to see Canute use some magic on the waves? Let me know in the comments.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc Episode 9

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc Episode 9

Hashira vs. Upper Six

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc Episode 9 finished Muichirou’s arc. We got to see the end of his backstory. And we also got to see him defeat one of the Upper Six demons, Gyokko. So, his character arc seems to be done.

As I predicted in my review of Episode 8, it was Lady Amane who saved Muichirou in the past. She and her attendants (daughters?) were able to save Muichirou’s life. But, they were too late to save Yuichirou. And, as expected, they brought Muichirou back to the Demon Slayer headquarters.

One thing we didn’t get to see is who trained Muichirou. But, it may be that he trained himself. The Mist Breathing technique might not have come from someone else. Just look at the matching outfits Muichirou and Yuichirou wore. They had mist cloud patterns on them.

Gyokko in Muichirou's mist from the anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc Episode 9
Gyokko in Muichirou’s mist

Now, for the fight between Muichirou and Gyokko. Am I the only one who thought it was too easy for Muichirou to win? Back in the Entertainment District Arc, it took five people to defeat Gyuutarou and Daki. Tengen (a Hashira), Tenjirou, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Nezuko all played a role.

Gyokko has a higher rank than Gyuutarou and Daki. And yet, Muichirou was able to defeat him without the help of any other Demon Slayers. Not only that, but he defeated Gyokko pretty easily. The second Muichirou actually took the fight seriously, he decapitated Gyokko.

Even in his most powerful form, Gyokko didn’t stand a chance.

Though, I guess Rengoku did almost kill Akaza, who’s the third-ranked demon. But, still, it seemed like killing Gyokko was way too easy for Muichirou. Is it because we’re at the point where it’s time to speed up the plot and get to Muzan?

Tanjirou Rengoku

We got to see Muichirou do some cool stuff in Episode 9. In particular, I liked the shot of him walking through the mist toward the viewer. The attack he used to behead Gyokko wasn’t flashy. But, that was a definitively cool scene.

Toward the end of the episode, we also got to see Mitsuri do some cool stuff, too. Her entrance with the moon as the backdrop was nice. Though, I would have preferred a Sailor Moon reference. And the way she lassoed the one dragon and used it to hit the other two was awesome.

But, my favorite scene of the episode wasn’t one of these action scenes. My favorite scene was Kotetsu revealing that Rengoku’s handguard is what saved him.

There are a few things I liked about this scene. It had Rengoku in it. We saw a bit of Muichirou’s relationship with Rengoku. And we learned that Tanjirou wants to honor Rengoku.

Kyoujurou Rengoku from the anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc Episode 9
Kyoujurou Rengoku

It’s no surprise that Rengoku is one of the most popular characters from Demon Slayer. He’s a likable guy and he received the best death scene of the series — at least up to this point. As I’ve said in other reviews, a great death scene can do a lot for a character.

So, I always like when we get to see Rengoku again. And, usually, when we see Rengoku again, it’s alongside another Hashira. In the Entertainment District Arc, we saw Tengen channeling his inner Rengoku. And here, we saw that Rengoku befriended Muichirou when he became a Hashira.

That’s why Muichirou reacted to hearing that Tanjirou wants to honor Rengoku. Tanjirou plans to have Rengoku’s handguard put on his newly-restored Nichirin blade. And since it’s a flame design, that still fits Tanjirou. Sun Breathing and Flame breathing are pretty similar.

The Love Hashira Arrives Precisely When She Means To

Have you noticed that Mitsuri Kanroji always arrives at the last second? She showed up right as the giant fish demon was about to kill the village chief. And now she showed up right as the giant wooden dragon was about to crush Tanjirou.

Oh, and I guess she also showed up in the village right before the other fish monsters killed everyone. She has a knack for showing up at the last possible moment before disaster. So far, that’s worked out. But, I have a feeling things are going to go wrong.

Tokitou had a pretty easy time defeating Gyokko, as I already mentioned. I’m not so sure that Mitsuri is going to have an easy time defeating Hantengu. And it’s not solely because Hantengu is a stronger demon. It’s also because Mitsuri isn’t Tokitou.

Mitsuri Kanroji vs. Hantengu's Hatred form from the anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc Episode 9
Mitsuri Kanroji vs. Hantengu’s Hatred form

As we know, Tokitou is considered a child prodigy. He made it to the rank of Hashira around the age of 15. Meanwhile, Mitsuri worked her way up to the rank of Hashira in search of a man stronger than her to be her husband. So, they’re not quite the same.

And, what are the chances we see the easy defeat of two Upper-Rank demons back-to-back? That seems unlikely, to me. I’m not expecting Mitsuri to be able to solo Hantengu the way Muichirou was able to solo Gyokko. But, that doesn’t mean I really have any idea of what’s going to happen.

We could see Mitsuri die here. But, would that make sense for her character? I guess it depends on what her backstory looks like. However, it seems to make more sense that someone would save her — like Tanjirou. The only problem is Tanjirou is injured.

Conclusion

What do you think of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc Episode 9? Was Gyokko’s defeat too easy for Muichirou? Will we see Rengoku in another flashback this arc in relation to Mitsuri? And, do you expect Mitsuri to be able to take down Hantengu? Let me know in the comments.

Hell’s Paradise Episode 9

Hell’s Paradise Episode 9

Gods and People

After a week-long break, Hell’s Paradise is back with Episode 9. And this might have been the most action-packed episode of the series, so far. Sure, there’s been plenty of action before now. But, the fight between Gabimaru and Zhu Jin in this episode seemed to be the biggest.

But, I’ll get to that in a bit. First, I want to go over what we learned about the island’s inhabitants from Hoko. Apparently, Hoko and the others from his village were once human. However, they suffered from some sort of illness that slowly turned them into trees.

Hoko is the last of his people, with the rest of the villagers having died of the disease. When they near the end of their lives, the villagers make their way toward Horai and pray there until they die. These are the praying trees Gabimaru runs into.

A human turned into a tree from the anime series Hell's Paradise Episode 9
A human turned into a tree

Hoko also mentions that he’s nearing the end of his life. So, before the end of the series, I’m expecting him to meet the same fate as the others. But, what exactly is this disease that affected the people of the island? I believe it’s none other than the Elixer of Life.

The villagers turning into trees is pretty similar to what we’ve seen happen to others on the island. Now, the difference is that the others who have died there turn into flowers. But, that’s still plant life. And as Hoko says, his people lived long lives because of their devotion.

So, my prediction is that these people were actually having their life forces drained. It was a slow process because of their long lives. But, the end result is the same as those who get stung by the island’s insects. They become the Elixer of Life.

How to Kill a God

Something Gabimaru finds out in Episode 9 is that the Tensen are not gods. They’re technically not even immortal. He can kill them with the right plan. And he knows this because he almost killed one of them without a plan.

Zhu Jin is the orange-haired Tensen who Gabimaru fought. Simply by attacking fast enough, Gabimaru was able to overcome Zhu Jin’s regeneration. And this led to Zhu Jin having to use their trump card, which was the flower monster form they took on. So, if Gabimaru prepares, he should be able to kill a Tensen.

But, how could he prepare for this? Would the combined strength of him, Sagiri, Yuzuriha, and Senta be enough? What about if Fuchi and Gantetsusai joined in since we saw them at the end of the episode? Well, that still likely wouldn’t be enough.

Zhu Jin turning into flowers from the anime series Hell's Paradise Episode 9
Zhu Jin turning into flowers

Luckily, we did get a clue on how to defeat a Tensen. And that clue came from an unlikely source: Mei. You see, Mei isn’t a normal girl. We already knew this since Hoko mentioned she’s hundreds of years old. But, what also makes her strange is her ability to use powers.

Mei used the same kind of punch attack on Gabimaru that Zhu Jin used. And she was also able to create a forcefield to protect Gabimaru from Zhu Jin’s attack. It’s almost as if she’s one of the Tensen herself. Zhu Jin even knows Mei, which further implies this.

But, whether Mei is a Tensen or not isn’t what’s important. What’s important is that she could teach Gabimaru some of her techniques. Most notably, she could teach him that glowing punch attack. With that, Gabimaru might be able to kill a Tensen. And, he could kill his immortal father-in-law to save his wife.

The Seven Hermits of Shinsenkyo

As Hoko tells our protagonists, and as we ourselves saw, there are seven hermits of Shinsenkyo. The hermits are, as I predicted, the Tensen. But, these seven hermits are all part of the same one being, which is a bit weird.

The Tensen that appears to be in charge mentioned that they have a master. However, my guess is that their “master” is their combined entity. Hoko explains that there was originally only one hermit of Shinsenkyo. But, that hermit split their body into seven, creating the Tensen we see today.

And, I’m going to assume Mei is another body that split off from this original hermit. But, even if that’s the case, it’s possible that the other Tensen don’t realize that. Or, maybe they do, but they don’t acknowledge Mei as one of their own. They don’t kill her, but she’s not in their group.

The seven hermits of Shinsenkyo from the anime series Hell's Paradise Episode 9
The seven hermits of Shinsenkyo

There is one potential issue with all this, though. Think back to the legends of Shinsenkyo. The legends spoke of multiple hermits who all appeared as old men. You know, like the leader of Iwagakure. But, we’re being told that the seven Tensen split off from one original hermit.

So, was that original hermit one of many? Did he sacrifice the other hermits to acquire the Elixer of Life and then split into the Tensen? Or, was there always only one hermit? And how does this work into the Iwagakure leader’s story of how he gained immortality?

There is one thing we know. Hoko has repeatedly said that things changed 1,000 years ago. Before then, his village was lively. So, that seems to be when some event happened. That could be when someone — like this original hermit — obtained the Elixer of Life.

Conclusion

What do you think of Hell’s Paradise Episode 9? Do you think the villagers turned into trees because their life force was absorbed? Will Mei teach Gabimaru the secret technique for killing Tensen? And, do you think Mei is another body split off from the original hermit? Let me know in the comments.
